August News from the Village..for the friends & guests of Hillfield's.

August is a month full of festivals, regattas, events and attractions whatever the weather. With a rich and ancient heritage Dartmouth and surrounding towns will amply repay a visit, each have a character all their own and are well worth exploring.  We prefer to picture our area as a playground whether you are seeking the adrenaline-fuelled thrills of Woodlands and other activities such as hiking, cycling, impressive stately homes and country houses, all providing a rich resource for visitors to explore and enjoy.  There's more to a day out than just getting into the car - the journey can be part of the fun. Taking a ferry, a walk, cycle ride or a steam train trip can be the highlight of the day and more enjoyable than the driving.  Eating out are South Devon pastimes, the region offers an enticing choice of pubs, restaurants, bistros and cafes.

We had found the "Dartmouth Apprentice" by chance, (it is a few minutes walk from the Centre, heading into South Town) and had investigated this intriguing former church over morning coffee.  Returning for dinner we were not disappointed.  The building conversion is impressive though you should try to get a table with some views of the Dart. The menu is not vast and has an obvious Italian influence but there is something for all tastes.  The food itself was simply excellent.  Add in informal but deceptively professional service and the knowledge that you are supporting a worthwhile charity, this becomes good value at £30 per head.

Crafty Tudors and Tudor Tales

2009 is the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII’s accession to the throne, and to celebrate the reign of one of history’s greatest monarchs, Dartmouth Castle is staging all new events at this picturesque Devon fortress that once formed a part of King Henry’s great chain of coastal defences. Every Monday and Tuesday in August, young visitors will get the chance to be a part of the Crafty Tudors & Tudor Tales. On Mondays, Crafty Tudors will see children of all ages being welcomed by castle staff to take part in a spot of Tudor craft making – parents can even help out too!  Boys will get to be king for the day as they make themselves a Henry VIII style crown and accompanying beard for a decidedly regal look, while girls can try their hands at Tudor chic by making jewelry or creating a new signature style with their very own new bonnets.

Young visitors can then return on Tuesdays in their stately attire the following day as the popular Rattle box puppet theatre will stage their 30 minute Tudor Tales at intervals throughout the day, presenting a vivid retelling of the lives of the Tudor family. What better way to get our younger visitors to explore Tudor life with a month of Crafty Tudors and Tudor Tales events. Not only will children get to find out all about the Tudors, they will also have the chance to show off their creative side and take home their hand-made Tudor-inspired wares!

After enjoying the Tudor Tales and Crafts, families can take in the beautiful surroundings of Dartmouth Castle or even enjoy some refreshments at the tearoom nearby. The fortress has guarded the Dart Estuary and the nearby town of Dartmouth since 1366, and has been a part of England’s coastal defence through the Civil War up until after World War II. more

My Favourite Cottage  by Paul

If you are looking for high quality cottage or apartment accommodation with a stunning location and friendly and attentive owners, then a visit to Hillfield Cottages is an absolute must.  My Wife and I discovered this superb holiday location several years ago and have now lost count regarding the number of subsequent visits.  Every property has sumptuous furnishings, beautiful kitchens and bathrooms and all today’s essential appliances thus helping to achieve that ‘what a fabulous holiday’ feeling as you finally pull out of the drive and head home.

Our favorite cottage has to be Court Cottage with two excellent bedrooms (both with en-suite), a superb lounge / diner / open plan kitchen, a ground floor decked patio area and a first floor balcony with open views across the tennis court. Court Cottages are a bit like Dr Who’s Tardis – compact looking from the outside, but step through the door and you are presented with ample space for up to 4 adults.

Whether you are taking breakfast on the decking, cooking a meal in the great kitchen, relaxing in the whirlpool bath, using the networked hi-fi system, watching a dvd with cinema surround or simply walking in the beautiful local countryside, you will enjoy your stay – we do!  more

We would welcome features from any of our guests reporting on the accommodation at Hillfield's.
