News from the Village..for the friends & guests of Hillfield's.

Out of season, late Summer and Autumn breaks attract families with pre-school children, not restricted by the need to take their holiday whilst the schools are off. Tourist attractions including farm parks, the zoo, model village and aquarium are less busy, beaches not so crowded and car-parking easier – factors that appeal when travelling with one or more toddlers in tow.  Those without children also avoid the busier school holidays and take their breaks later, enjoying the lower rates, the couples discounts and short break availability as well as the quieter towns and the more relaxed pace that is the South Hams during most of the year.

A new lease of life for Walter the Water Wheel.

Friends and staff of the Turtley Corn Mill near Avonwick were celebrating last month when Walter the Water Wheel, an integral part of the pub and restaurant’s identity and history, was set working again after a long and costly renovation project.

It was a huge team effort with Alan Soper, aged 86, from Kingsbridge, renovating the cast and bearings and then climbing  into the wheel himself to re-bed them when it was repositioned and Ivybridge based JDC Builders providing the carpenters and their buying power to help reduce the cost of materials.  As the two carpenters said – “we spend our lives making square things, it’s such a pleasure to make something round”!

The Turtley Corn Mill’s owner Bruce Brunning, said: “It was a very interesting task indeed and we are indebted to everyone who helped.”  He added: “The history of the Mill is fascinating and we wanted to ensure it retained much of its original identity. We must be one of the very few places in Devon taking on the task of building a new wheel but I think it is important to help preserve our history otherwise part of our heritage will be lost.”

A special day for Caroline & Michael

Michael & Caroline are delighted to announce the wedding of their daughter Rebecca Edwards to Christopher Eagles.  The Marriage took place on Sunday 9th August at the family church of St Michaels, Budbrooke, Warwick.  The service was taken by Mary Lodge a friend of the family.  All at Hillfields wish them both every happiness for your future together and may all your dreams come true, With much love from all the extended Hillfield family.

A reception and evening celebration was held at the magnificent Ettington Park Hotel, set in 40 acres of parkland in the Warwickshire countryside, in a verdant valley with the River Stour meandering through it. Just 5 miles from the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon, the spectacular Neo-Gothic mansion is a world apart from the hustle and bustle of modern-day life.
Rebecca is a School Teacher at The Paddox Primary School in Rugby, Chris is a very talented freelance 3d Visualisation Specialist (Eagle I Visuals Ltd) producing photo quality computer generated images from Interior Designers and Architects drawings.  Late in the evening the guests were treated to Chris, his Best Men and Ushers taking over the instruments of the live band and performing several of their own band Brokenlines! original songs.   Special thanks to Miarna Nicoll a school friend of Becky's who made a wonderful job of the hair of Caroline and Becky and all five Bridesmaids

Book early to avoid disappointment

At a loss for what Christmas present to give to that special couple, how about booking an off season short break at Hillfields, that could solve your problem, also a great treat for the whole family!

Guest Recommended The Cricket Inn at Beesands

The Cricket Inn at Beesands is a little gem of a restaurant which unless you know the area will be bypassed. The Inn has built up an excellent reputation and offers a wide and varied menu, the seafood pancake is a must all cooked by a team of chefs under the guidance of the Proprietors Nigel and Rachel.

The Inn which has recently been tastefully modernised is situated right on the seafront overlooking Start Bay. We holiday in Devon at least twice a year and the Cricket Inn is always top of our list for dining out, our last visit was in August this year when we took our children and grandchildren and all loved it and were made very welcome.  Allan Speechly.
